Work related stress is a growing issue and as the latest H&S Executive Statistics show, with 10.5 million days lost to stress annually has now taken over from musculoskeletal disorders as the most commonly reported type of work related illness.

Whether we like it or not stress is a problem. We can't discount it as “all in the mind” and think that people who claim to be suffering from stress need to “pull themselves together”. The government, the medical establishment and the courts all recognise it as a real issue that needs to be addressed by every employer.

Employers have a Duty of Care to assess the risk of stress-related ill health under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and to take measures to control that risk under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 .

H&S Executive Approach – The Management Standards

The H&S Executive recommend bringing stress into the open and dealing with it head on. In November 2004, to assist employers in the workplace the H&S Executive developed a set of Management Standards.

The Management Standards represent a set of conditions that reflect high levels of health, well being and organisational performance. They cover 6 key areas of work and the primary sources of stress at work:

  • Demands of your job – such as workload, work patterns and the work environment
  • Control over your work – such as how much say a person has in the way they do their work
  • Support – such as the encouragement, sponsorship and resources provided by the organisation, line management and colleagues.
  • Relationships at work – such as promoting positive working to avoid conflict and dealing with unacceptable behaviour.
  • Role – such as whether people understand their role within the organisation and whether the organisation ensures that they do not have conflicting roles.
  • Change – such as how organisational change (large or small) is managed and communicated in the organisation.

The H&S Executives ‘Management Standards for Work-related Stress' provide a clear blueprint that can be applied in any organisation that is seeking to tackle stress.

They also suggest how the standards can be maintained in practice through dialogue, focus groups, risk assessments, surveys, etc. in order to identify and address problem areas.
